ON STAGE
Cal Rep's first 20 years, 1988-2008
Twentieth Anniversary
Twenty years old - ancient for a dog - on the cusp of maturity for a human - and impressive longevity in the life of a theatre company. Relativity rules!
How vividly I recall Cal Rep's much anticipated but disastrous opening night. With a resounding thud, the "comedy" I directed fell flat. The evening was interminable, but taught me a valuable lesson - never direct something you don't respect! As a Company we have tried to live by this credo. We have continuously striven to realize our highest aspirations and Cal Rep has come a long way in its twenty years of life. We moved into our own theatre in downtown Long Beach; discovered and created numerous new plays; have been showered with prizes and praise, fearlessly proclaimed our dedication to the Art of theatre, while protecting our sacred right to fail. Battling on after losing our space and tackling plays and subjects shunned by the commercial theatre, we have explored a multiplicity of issues and experiences and educated hundreds of young thespians. The journey has been thrilling and exhausting, but as a company we have clung tenaciously to our guiding principles. We have presented plays that challenge and delight; that expose and inspire.
Happy Twentieth Birthday Cal Rep!
